Shayne: I'm doing gig because of my mum Monday, April 30, 2007
By Maureen Coleman
X Factor star Shayne Ward has told how cancer care is close to his heart after his mother successfully battled the disease.
The heart-throb pop star is to perform at the Waterfront Hall's 10th anniversary gala concert on May 12 in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
And the singer has revealed that his decision to take part in the gala show was influenced by his personal experience of the illness.
Speaking exclusively to the Belfast Telegraph, Shayne said he was delighted to be playing Belfast again.
"I really enjoy supporting charities and certainly one charity I'm delighted to be able to support is Marie Curie Cancer Care," he said. " It's a cause that is close to my heart.
"When I was younger my mum was diagnosed with cancer. She was very lucky and it was successfully treated but cancer is something that often touches most peoples' lives at some point."
Shayne played Belfast earlier this year and said the crowd gave him a brilliant response.
"I've always found the audience in Belfast amazing. When I did the Belfast gigs while I was on my tour, the crowds were brilliant. They really know how to get behind you and it's always a great atmosphere."
During his visit to Belfast he also managed to slip out for some partying with his friends in Westlife, but said he hoped to get out a bit more this time round.
"I haven't spent enough time in Belfast itself to say I have a favourite spot. I'll have to spend more time there and let you know."
Joining Shayne at the Waterfront on May 12 will be recent X Factor runner-up Ray Quinn.
